If you've ever been afflicted with writer's block, you'll know it's no laughing matter — it can impede your writing for days, weeks, or even months. And while it's tempting to just ignore the problem and hope that it goes away, writer's block is one of those pests that requires active extermination.
If you're stuck writing and can't seem to connect with your muse, feel free to check out some of these inspirational writers and their advice for coping with writer's block:
Writer's block strikes individuals of all ages: from high schoolers who can't complete a paper assignment in time for a test, to adult writers who need help organizing their thoughts.
Writer's block is often associated with writer's cramp or arm numbness, but there are many other symptoms. In order to properly diagnose the condition it is necessary to be able to correctly identify the symptoms. The most common symptoms include:
According specifically to "The Writer's Journal," most cases of writer's block begin around mid-March. While there are different theories concerning the causes of writer's block, many writers believe the cause is due to insufficient stimulation or stress. Conventional thought holds that writer's block results from an inability to think properly. However, this is not necessarily the case; writer's block can be caused by other factors aside from stress and lack of stimuli. For example, writer's block can affect either male or female writers, and it may even be divided into two distinct types: "monomaniacal" and "hypercritical." According to John Foxe Spies, Ph.D. in his article "Writer's Block," a monomaniacal writer experiences a block in which he or she is unable to focus completely on the writing process. The term derives from "monomaniac," a single-minded individual who cannot think of anything or anyone aside from himself or herself. In other words, the writer is so focused on producing the right word choice that he or she becomes blind to what is written around it, much like a monomaniacal person cannot see anything outside of the one idea gripping his or her mind.
In contrast, a hypercritical writer tends to focus on correcting mistakes instead of completing more work. This is because the writer is not writing an original piece but rather copying down another person's work. A hypercritical writer cannot focus on the project completely because he or she has to keep pushing through an otherwise incoherent or defective piece. This occurs when a writer takes the words of another writer and reproduces them without creating his or her own style. Hypercritical writers are also often accused of being plagiarists, so it is important for both parties involved to have permission from each other before reproducing someone's work. Most writers experience their first bout of writer's block during the first year of their college experience.
